Thousands of Pro-Life People in Colombia March for Life to Protest Abortion

Colombia, With Life There Is Hope. That was the theme of the march for Life in varies cities across the South American country this weekend as pro-life people in more than 110 cities and towns participated in the 18th National March for Life to protest abortion.

The participants called in Colombia’s highest court to reverse its rulings allowing babies to be killed in abortions.

CNA reports on the events that took place:

The simultaneous pro-life demonstrations took place in Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cúcuta, Montería, Pereira, Cumaral, and scores of other cities.

In Bogotá, the marchers departed from the National Park and went down 7th Street until reaching Plaza Bolívar in the center of the Colombian capital.

In front of the thousands of people holding light blue flags and wearing blue neckerchiefs — the color of the pro-life movement — the president of United for Life, Jesús Magaña, read a manifesto in which he decried the “close to 20,000 abortions that have taken place in the city of Bogotá alone,” which amounts to “20 times more than other causes of violent deaths.”

Magaña also warned that the Constitutional Court intends to “say that abortion is a fundamental right, against the entire letter and spirit of our constitution, the feelings of the Colombian people, and signed international treaties.”

“We are unwilling to remain silent and stand by in the face of the largest massacre in the country,” he declared.

The Colombian Constitutional Court issued a radical pro-abortion ruling in February 2022 that forced the South American country to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions up to 24 weeks.

The court ruled 5-4 in favor of decriminalizing abortion in response to a series of lawsuits from pro-abortion groups. The high court initially split on the case, so it appointed two special judges to break the tie.

Until now, Colombia protected unborn babies’ right to life in most circumstances. It allowed abortions only in cases of rape and incest or threats to the mother’s life.

After the ruling, abortion activists, wearing green, celebrated in the streets of Bogotá, the capital, dancing and shouting because the killing of unborn babies in abortions is now legal, a video published by The Guardian shows.

Members of the country’s Congress also slammed the ruling as a violation of human rights and promised to work to undo it.

“The decision on abortion violates the right to life of the unborn, the most defenseless. We Colombians who respect life from conception will seek through a referendum to straighten out what the Constitutional Court has done today,” Sen. María del Rosario Guerra wrote on Twitter.

Another pro-life lawmaker, Sen. Paola Holguin, criticized the court for legalizing the “murder” of a defenseless child.

“Abortion is nothing different from the murder of a defenseless being by its mother in the womb; which goes against the fundamental right to life, enshrined in article 11 of the National Constitution,” Holguin wrote on Twitter. “#AbortoEs (abortion is) the murder of an innocent that denatures a mother. Life is always the best option, it is a fundamental and sacred right,” she continued.

Abortion activists and rich globalists have been targeting South and Central American countries’ pro-life laws for years, and several countries have caved into the pressure.

Argentina legalized abortions in late 2020, and Ecuador passed a pro-abortion bill last week. Additionally, the Mexico Supreme Court issued a ruling last year that pro-life advocates fear will be used to legalize the killing of unborn babies nation-wide in the coming years. Right now, Mexico allows states to decide, and most protect unborn babies by banning abortions.

In 2020, human rights groups across Central and South America accused the United Nations of pressuring their countries to legalize the killing of unborn babies in abortions during the coronavirus crisis.

Legalizing abortion does not save lives or help women. Abortions destroy unborn babies’ lives and often harm mothers physically and/or psychologically. Pro-abortion groups often overestimate the number of illegal and unsafe abortions that occur in countries across the world. Growing research also indicates that access to basic health care, not abortion, is what really improves women’s lives.
