The First Time I Saw My Baby Smile Was in the Womb

I will never forget the first time I saw her. It was on an ultrasound machine, where I could make out her smile, which resembled my mother’s.

The ultrasound technician pointed out that my preborn baby was playing with her toes, which brought home to me the full humanity of that child tucked safely within my womb.

The next time I would see her would be in the hospital, a few seconds after she was born. She had wisps of strawberry-blonde hair and a healthy cry.

She was just as much my daughter before birth as after birth. Her worth was not defined by her location, but was inherent from the very beginning.

As we approach Mother’s Day, I am so profoundly grateful for my child and the lovely young woman she has become. I marvel at her accomplishments, which include fluency in several languages and a genuine talent for dance.

How empty life would have been without her.

I salute all mothers who give of themselves every day so that their children can be cared for and loved. You are an inspiration and worthy of the greatest praise. May you be honored for your profound sacrifices and abundant devotion. You are the wind beneath so many wings!
