Two Suspects Arrested for Vandalizing Catholic Church

Louisville, Kentucky, police have detained two juvenile suspects on vandalism charges after they allegedly caused over $10,000 in damages to a local Catholic church.

According to a local WDRB report, police responded to a vandalism complaint at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church on April 9. Meade County Sheriff Phillip Wimpee told WDRB that his deputies found “extensive damage” both inside and outside the Church, as well as in the parish hall.

Security footage inside the Meade County church captured the two suspects spraying fire extinguishers throughout the church, destroying several religious artifacts, and pouring holy oil over the sanctuary’s carpet.

The suspects also turned a cross on the altar upside down, and caused damage to several headstones in the cemetery across the street from the church, according to the report.

Currently, the suspects are being held at a juvenile center in Bowling Green, where they await their first court appearance. They are both being charged with burglary in the second degree and criminal mischief in the first degree.

During the ongoing investigation, which has been turned over to the Meade County Attorney and Commonwealth Attorney’s Office for prosecution, St. Avila’s will remain closed.

According to CatholicVote’s violence tracker, there have been at least 413 attacks against the Catholic Church since May 2020.
